Your card number when using Google or Apple Pay will be different! Check this guide to learn why, and how to view your virtual card number.
When making a payment using a mobile phone or smartwatch, Apple Pay and Google Pay use a device-specific virtual account number instead of sharing your physical credit or debit card number (i.e., the 16-digit number on your card). This virtual number is unique to that particular iPhone or Android device and can only be accessed there. This process is commonly known as card number masking or "tokenisation" and comes into play every time you make a payment with either Apple Pay or Google Pay.
This means that the last four digits of the card number shown on a transaction or receipt will not match the last four digits on your physical bank card. While the Apple or Google Play app will display an image of the correct card, the last four digits in your virtual wallet will be different as a security measure to help prevent fraud. To identify the correct transaction for any refund, you’ll need to refer to the last four digits displayed in your Apple Wallet or Google Wallet.
Here are a couple of step-by-step guides to help you identify the correct last four digits on both Apple Pay and Google Pay, starting with the former. Please note, a Video Guide can also be found here.
Apple Pay
-
Search for "Wallet" and then tap to open the app. Do not use the shortcut for Apple Pay, as this may not allow you to open the settings screen.
-
Select the card that was used for the transaction in question.
-
Tap the three dots in the upper right corner. You should be able to see the transaction in the "Latest Transactions" list below the card.
-
Circled in the image below is the device account number, with the last four digits unobscured. And hey presto, this will be the "last four" digits associated with the transaction!
Google Pay
-
Search for "Wallet" and then tap to open the app. Do not use the shortcut for Google Pay, as this may not allow you to open the settings screen.
-
Select the card used for the transaction by swiping left/right. Each card will also show the most recent transactions underneath for ease. Tap on the "Details" button at the bottom of the page which will bring up further information about this card (circled in red).
-
From this screen, we can then see the virtual account number (circled in red) that will likely be the "last four" digits you're looking for in this scenario!
